(Photo #1) The Michigan Court of Appeals Court recently held a day of oral arguments at the Auburn Hills campus of Cooley Law School. Chief Judge Henry Saad (center) presided and was joined by Judges Kurtis Wilder (far left) and Pat Donofrio (second from right). Last summer, Donofrio proposed the idea of bringing an entire day’s case call to Cooley Auburn Hills and was primarily responsible for making the event happen working together with Assistant Dean Lauren Rousseau (second from left), Professor Mark Cooney (far right), and Campus Director Audra Foster (not pictured).
(Photo #2) On hand to welcome the three Michigan Court of Appeals judges (center) were (left to right) Prof. Mark Cooney, Melissa Winkler, Maria Provenzano, Tarra Brown, Jennifer Blanchard, Michael Morton, Ashley Jenkins, Robert Hamor, Philip Kim, and John Hohmeier. Cooney, the former chair of the State Bar of Michigan Appellate Practice Section, supervised approximately a dozen students who prepared case summaries for the eleven cases set for argument. Those cases included issues dealing with personal jurisdiction, Miranda and the right to counsel, foreclosure liens and priorities, wrongful death, ineffective assistance of counsel, shareholder lawsuits, termination of parental rights, commercial contract disputes, construction contracts, attorneys fees, and construction liens. The event provided an opportunity for the students to see the law in action—to learn firsthand from the lawyers and judges who made the extra effort to bring the real world into the law school setting.
