Legal Aid and Defender presents 'Laddy' awards

Legal Aid and Defender Association honored two judges, a law firm, a corporate office of general counsel and a number of individual attorneys at its third annual “Laddy” awards ceremony held recently in the historic chief judge’s courtroom at the Theodore Levin U.S. Courthouse.
LAD bestows Laddys annually on members of the legal community for their pro bono services to its clients.

Chief Judge Gerald E. Rosen of the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Michigan presided over the ceremony. 

He thanked “all those who provide pro bono services, on behalf not only of myself but the entire bench of the Eastern District of Michigan.”

“We thank those who help us beyond what we can do with our limited financial resources,” LAD President and CEO Deierdre L. Weir said. “We appreciate all you do for us.”

This year’s Laddy winners were: 

Pro Bono Attorney of the Year - Lindsay DeMoss, of Royal Oak, an attorney with Dickinson Wright PLLC

Pro Bono Law Firm of the Year - Miller Canfield P.L.C.

Kelvin W. Scott Pro Bono Corporation of the Year - Ford Motor Company Office of General Counsel

Pro Bono Spirit Macomb County - Melissa M. Pearce, of Commerce Township, an attorney in private practice

Pro Bono Spirit Oakland County - Joycelyn Ward, of Farmington Hills, an attorney in private practice

Pro Bono Spirit Wayne County - Khalilah V. Spencer, of West Bloomfield, an attorney with Honigman Miller Schwartz and Cohn LLP

Frank D. Eaman Warrior of Justice - Craig A. Daly, of Royal Oak, an attorney in private practice

Ed Pokorny Pioneer of Justice Award - Michael F. Sapala, retired Wayne County Circuit Court judge

Friend of LAD - Judge Charles G. Goedert of 43rd District Court, Hazel Park  LAD also awarded Pangborn Pins, designed by graphic artist Dominic Pangborn, for 50 hours or more of pro bono service to
Ward and attorneys Charles Duncan, Timothy Knowlton and Kelsey Switzer of Honigman Miller Schwartz and Cohn LLP; Randi Glanz and Matthew Heron of Clark Hill PLC; and Alexander Simpson, II of Bodman PLC.
