FBA shines spotlight on Detroit attorney

The Federal Bar Association (FBA), Eastern District of Michigan Chapter, recently hosted the 31st Annual Leonard R. Gilman Award Luncheon at the Westin Book Cadillac in Detroit. During the event, attorney Gerald K. Evelyn (second from right) was presented with the Gilman Award and attendees heard from guest speaker Andrea D. Lyon (far left), dean of Valparaiso University Law School. Welcoming Evelyn and Lyon to the lunch were FBA President Kimberly Altman (second from left) and FBA President-elect Susan Fairchild (far right).  Evelyn, a life-long Detroiter, graduated from Antioch School of Law and began work for the State Defender’s Office. In 1981, he went into private practice with his mentor, Myzell Sowell Sr. Evelyn practiced law with Sowell, specializing in criminal defense, until shortly before Sowell’s death in 2009. During his 37-year career, Evelyn handled many complex cases in both state and federal court.
